Top 5 Cheapest Armies

With #newyearnewarmy, I got thinking what are the cheapest (financially speaking) ways to start an army. What would be a cheap way to start an army, that you can use on the table straight away after purchase. With a legal detachment(s) from the box. No kitbashing, though I'll cover this at later date. Starting armies from, what you get in the box.

1. Adeptus Custodes.

The Custodian Guard box is £35 and you can either build five wardens or have a Shield Captain (HQ), Vexilus Praetor (Elites) and a three man Custodian Guard squad (troop). A patrol detachment with an added elite choice. You also get a nice selection of weapons.

2. Grey Knights

A ten man box in for £37.50 gives you two choices, either a patrol detachment with two brother champions (hq) and a strike squad (troop) or a supreme command detachment by making three brother champions (hq) and a purifier squad. The strike squad is one of my favourite boxes. The ability to make all but the terminator variants of grey knight squads. Makes it easy to create a great varied grey knight army.

3. Knights (Chaos or Imperial)

£45 gets you two armigers or the horrid chaos version. There's two options you can buy, except each box only contains one type. There's no variation of weapons other then the melta or stubber; that is mounted upon the back of each knight. This box is two auxiliary super heavy detachments. Personally I prefer the warglaives, because of big ass chainsword and thermal cannon.

4. Death Guard.

So I have to bring up the know no fear box, this is the best value box you can buy for warhammer 40,000. This £50 gives you two armies. Death guard and Space Marines; but in the interest of honesty. I have to put death guard over space marines because of the codex prices. Death guard having their own codex can make it £17.50 cheaper than space marines. With the supplements for space marine chapters means you'll need two codexes. If you are choosing blood angels, space wolves or dark angels where the price is the same. So what do you get? Lord contagion (hq) ten pox walkers (troop) five plague marines (troop) and a bloat drone (fast attack). Out of all the boxes covered in the list, the know no fear box is the best value.

5. Space Marines (Blood Angels, Dark Angels, Space wolves or Basic chapter)

As stated before the know no fear box is £50, you get a load of models. For the loyal warriors of the imperium, you get Captain in Gravis armour (Hq) five intercessors (troop) five Hell blasters (heavy support) and three interceptors (Fast attack). As with the death guard it's a great value box. As with models you get a mini codex (?) which has lore and rules. The box makes makes a cool building with a play mat. Really worth it if you can find someone to go halves on it with you making the price £25.
