With Warhammer being far from the cheapest hobby, still not the most expensive; gun and car collectors have that one. I have wondered which army is the cheapest? Not just in initial starting or money saving with the start collecting boxes. You can get so many until you have a literal army of commissars. An army which you can build say 1500 pts for less than £200, again with out the start collecting boxes (or combat patrol boxes either).
To start with it would have to have a high point to model ratio, so Orks, Eldar, Imperial Guard etc are out. The pare minimum has to be at least 50 points per mini average. So Space marine terminators are good example, but this would have to include troop choices too. So grey knights? Well maybe not, with saving money you need to use all the box and while yes you can start a grey knight force with a strike or paladin squad boxes. With the paladin box, you would need to start it with two boxes for your three elites of a vanguard detatchment. No that won't do, we need to start with a single basic box.
Harlequins? You can use one mini from the troupe box as a troupe master and the rest as a troupe choice. At £25 for 135 and the rest being on the lower end points wise, it would be hard to make the goal. Still there has to be one right?
Knights, imperial knights. Right they are big and worth alot of points? Also kind of cheating and no, even with the high points. £200 will not get you a 1500 army. This goes for a tyranid nidzilla force too.
Well that does it I suppose, if a knight force can't do it then surely none can? Wait there is one. Adeptus custodes, I was shocked first too. The lowest Custodes is 49 point basic (according to battlescribe) each box has five. So that is 245 points for £35, so five boxes at £175 is 1225 points. Add in Trajann Valoris at 190 at £25; it brings us to 1415 at £200. That is basic Custodians though. Jetbikes are 95 points each at three in box, that is 285 points a box. Do the same math as last time times 5 to make £175, we have 1425 points without Valoriss.
Finally a single custodian guard box, can create a starting force of up to, 403 points, this includes a a squad of custodians, shield captian and a Vexilus Praetors, carrying Custodes Vexilla. . Which is about the same as most of the original start collecting boxes. So which army is the cheapest. Surprisingly, the Emperor's own body guard, the adeptus custodes.
